The La Crosse City Council's judiciary committee has approved a resolution to seek reimbursement from the Bush For President Campaign for expenses related to a visit by the president in May.

While the total cost to the city for law enforcement overtime pay and preparation expenses for the visit is estimated to be $78,000, the committee voted to ask for $7,800 from the campaign.

But, not everyone agrees. One council member says La Crosse receives thousands of dollars from hotel lodging and meals and from visitors coming to the city to see the president and spending money in their community. However, Mayor John Medinger says the entire event is political, and taxpapers should not pay the costs to help Bush win reelection.

The entire city council takes up the matter next week.
