Help for Rural Schools

The State Superintendent of Public Education said her six-part proposal will help rural school districts cope with shrinking enrollments and higher costs.

During a meeting with teachers from around the state, Elizabeth Burmaster outlined a plan including higher per-pupil aid to help smaller districts, and finding ways to meet other budgetary challenges.

There will also be more transportation aid, and her department will research more ways to help rural schools.

"We need to insure the future of our strong rural schools, and the quality education they provide is advance through the kind of school finance they need," Burmaster said.

Her plan also provides a million dollars in federal funding to help rural schools work with children who have autism and behavioral problems. Such programs are taking up a large share of school budgets.
