The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and all other four-year UW System campuses will raise tuition rates to offset budget cuts caused by the state budget deficit.

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted Thursday to raise tuition at the Madison and Milwaukee schools by $700.00 a year. All other four year campuses, including Eau Claire, will boost tuition by $500.00 a year.

The additional money generated by the tuition increases will be used to offset a $250-million cut imposed by the state legislature and the governor to the system's two-year budget.

The increase goes into effect this coming 2004-2005 school year. The regents' vote was 12 in favor and four against.
