Eau Claire police say the man killed in a fire at his home Sunday apparently took his own life.

Police say 71-year-old Ronald Belding had called 911 Sunday afternoon saying he had set his house on fire and wanted to kill himself. A neighbor then called and reported the house at 423 Union Street was on fire.

Police say evidence at the scene shows that accelerants were used to set the fire and that Belding died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Three local firefighters were treated at a hospital for heat exhaustion.
