The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department says one of it's squad cars was damaged and a deputy hurt after the squad was hit by a vehicle.
It happened at 7:30 Wednesday morning in the Township of Auburn. Captain Eugene Gutsch says the deputy was called to a home after a report about a person outside in a vehicle causing problems. He says when the deputy arrived at the home the vehicle in the driveway fled the scene and hit the squad car.
Gutsch says the deputy then chased the suspect's vehicle. The deputy's squad car slammed into the rear end of the vehicle when the suspect braked hard and stopped in the roadway.
The deputy got out of his squad, broke a window in the suspect's car and pulled the suspect from the vehicle.
Gutsch says 36 year old Shawn A. Gumness was arrested. He faces charges of knowing fleeing and reckless endangerment. Gutsch says it is possible Gumness will face additional charges. Gumness is being held on a mental commitment at a local hospital.
Gutsch says further investigation revealed that he struck a person at the residence with his vehicle. He says that Gumness was apparently in the process of attempting to run over the person he had struck when the deputy arrived on the scene.
The person struck at the residence did not require medical attention. The deputy suffered minor injuries and was treated at St. Joseph Hospital in Chippewa Falls.
