A new report shows Wisconsin gets a failing grade to prevent colorectal cancer.

The 2010 Colorectal Cancer Legislation Report Card is issued by the American Cancer Society. The failing grade comes because the society says there is no law that requires insurance companies to cover screenings for colorectal cancer.

Peg Banks, with the American Cancer Society said because the cost is so pricey, many people in Wisconsin don't get tested before it's too late. She says, “For those find the polyps early and prevent colorectal cancer from even starting, there is an extremely, extremely, high survival rate. But that rate decreases rapidly when colorectal is found at a later stage."

Earlier this year, an assembly committee passed a bill requiring all state-regulated insurance providers cover the cost of routine colorectal cancer screenings, which must now be scheduled for a full floor vote.
