Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Chippewa Fire Protection District and Menomonie Fire Departments joined together to host physical ability testing for people applying for job openings.

Candidates have to go through eight stations in 10 minutes, 20 seconds that simulate jobs that need to be done at the scene of a fire.

"It's just part of the while hiring process," says Chippewa Valley Technical College Firefighting Instructor. "(The departments) have to determine if the candidate is able to physically do the job of firefighting."

All candidates wear a 50-pound vest while doing jobs like dragging a 165-pound mannequin, breaking through barriers and raising ladders.

Despite the challenges, officials say 80 percent of candidates, made up of graduated students and people looking to get onto the eligibility pool, will pass the test.
