Some 380 teenagers from around the country are using a week of their summer vacation to help less-fortunate homeowners in Northwestern Wisconsin. They're part of a Ladysmith-based, Christian organization called Teen Serve.
Leaders of the group hold fundraisers to buy materials like paint and lumber, then send the kids to help repair the homes of people in need. Those who volunteer spend a week doing things like painting, roof repair, and drywall. Some are even building ramps to insure wheelchair access for the physically challenged.
"We tell them they're going to be in a crew with different people than their youth group, and they're a little bit nervous about it," said Teen Serve's Chris Uttecht. "By the end of the week, they're running around, they're talking; they really do make friends for a lifetime."
The teenagers will spend Friday working on area homes. After a day of reflecting on their experience at Flambeau Schools, they'll return home on Sunday.
