The federal government has awarded nearly $1 million to Wisconsin to improve the care given to Alzheimer's patients and their families.
The state secretary of health and family services made the announcement Tuesday morning from the L.E. Phillips Senior Center.
Wisconsin is one of 22 states to secure the additional funding, which seeks to raise awareness about how effective treatment can help.
"If people do have Alzheimer's disease, if they get medicine early, they can delay the worsening of the disease," says Helene Nelson, "And their family and caregiver can get support they need and this is what the grant will help us do."
The state plans to divide the grant between four or five areas in Wisconsin that care for Alzheimer's patients and their families.
The funding will be distributed by next year.
