63 people died in 58 crashed in May. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says there was 15 more fatalities last month than there were in May 2009.

They also say there were five more fatalities in May 2010 than for five year average for the Month of May.

During the Memorial Day holiday 11 people were killed in traffic accidents. This included four killed in motorcycle crashes. Last year 10 people were killed in crashes during the Memorial Day weekend.

As of May 31, 2010, 192 people have died in traffic accidents. That number includes 27 motorcycle drivers.

“To save lives and prevent serious injuries on Wisconsin roads, more than 375 law enforcement agencies throughout the state mobilized for the Click It or Ticket safety belt campaign from May 24 through June 6,” says Dennis Hughes, chief of safety programs for the WisDOT Bureau of Transportation Safety. “The momentum generated by Click It or Ticket will continue. We’re near the one-year anniversary of the enactment in Wisconsin of primary safety belt enforcement, which allows an officer to stop and ticket unbuckled drivers and passengers even if the officer did not observe another violation. Last year, convictions for failure to fasten safety belts exceeded 100,000 for the first time in state history, and safety belt violations were approximately 12 percent of all traffic convictions in 2009.”
