Air traffic control will continue to operate under federal budget

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The new federal budget provides $140 million for air traffic control contracts at more than 250 small airports in Wisconsin and across the country.

The budget now includes contracts for those towers through the end of September 2014.

Many of the control towers were targeted for closure last year because of federal budget cuts.

The towers are operated by private contractors, and the Federal Aviation Administration proposed ending those contracts.

Charity Speich with the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport says they have been keeping an eye on it.

"We've been watching it very closely, not just for the air traffic control tower funding, but also for the airport improvement program which funds all of our capital improvements and other aviation programs,” said Speich.
