Alternate Side Parking Begins November 1st.

Winter has arrived and with it comes the start of alternate side parking. Starting on November 1st all vehicles must be parked on the even numbered side of the street on even numbered calendar days, on odd numbered calendar days only park on the odd numbered side of the street. The hours of enforcement are between 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. The only exception is for streets where parking is only allowed on one side. Vehicles on these streets may park on the side where parking is normally allowed.

Violators of alternate side parking will receive a $15.00 citation which goes up in cost if not paid within ten days. In addition vehicles that have ten alternate side violations during the season will be towed at the owners expense for every violation thereafter. Non-payment may also result in suspension of your license.

“The ordinance exists to assure that the snowplows can get through,” said Onalaska Police Chief Jeffrey Trotnic, “we are often asked why enforcement starts when there’s no snow. Establishing a set time to begin enforcement allows citizens to become accustomed to parking on alternate sides of the street This avoids a rapid shift in weather overnight catching us unprepared, it allows the Street Department to keep the streets clear.”

Keep in mind that the hours of enforcement start at 1a.m. and that can be confusing. A person living at 415 Main St would need to be parked on the their side of the street on an odd number calendar day , this means that on the even number calendar day prior to retiring for the evening make sure that your car is on the odd side of the street.
Alternate side parking is in effect from November 1st to April 1st.
