Area village celebrates 150 years

Colfax, WI (WEAU) -- An area village is celebrating in a big ways, as their small town turns 150 years old.

The village of Colfax is celebrating their sesquicentennial and since Thursday people have been gathering to help celebrate the city's milestone.

Coryne Knutson from Colfax says the four day celebration has a lot of highlights. She says, "Seeing people from out of town and enjoying the comradery, food, and the parade."

Hundreds of people are coming out to enjoy a pancake breakfast, take in a parade, and of course to soak in the town's history.

Colfax Historian Troy Knutson says, "There was nothing here, but John D. Simons settled in this area about 1864 and he started a mill right down here, on the creek. That was really convenient for the other people in the area, so it kind of started the whole deal.”

Knutson says preserving the town's history is vital. He says, "If we don't, it's just going to die off. That's why you've got to keep it going and keep remembering where it all started because if it wasn't for those people we wouldn't be here today.”

Which is why Knutson wrote a book, documenting Colfax’s history. He says, "Up until this point there really has been no written history, or book format of any kind. It was so nice to end up with a book the size it is, and parents can buy it and pass it on to their kids and their grandkids."

But for now, kids like Callen Robel from Colfax have one thing on their minds, “Candy! Lots of candy.” Robel says.

If you want to get in on the milestone celebration, the Colfax railroad museum will be open for tours from 9 in the morning to 2 o'clock tomorrow. There will also be an ice cream social from noon to 2 in the afternoon.
