September Boy Scouts Airshow cancelled

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Three years ago the roaring of the Blue Angels filled the skies of Eau Claire. The sights of the Golden Knights wowed the crowd. All of this was the plan again come September, until now.

"It's very disappointing," said Julie Pangallo, a co-chair of the event.

Pangallo is one of 70 people that had been working to put it together. She says without military support, it is tough for the show to go on.

"The static displays, the fly-overs, the military demos, all of that goes away, an air show without it is just not viable," she said.

But it is not just the fans that are losing out. She says half of the people who came to the show came from places like Minnesota. Driving with them, dollars into Eau Claire.

"It brings in a lot of tourism dollars for hotels and restaurants and has a huge economic impact, so it really affects a lot of people and we really wanna bring it back to the community as much as we can," she said.

The Boy Scouts, along with 20 other non-profits help with the show from start to finish. For young ones, she says the show is a great learning experience. Without it, there could be another unforeseen effect.

"Air shows across the country are being cancelled because of the lack of military involvement in the shows, it's a major recruitment tool for them too, so it will be interesting to see how they fill to fit their needs," she added.

And so, what was a weekend of fun planned for tens of thousands of people this fall now is an open spot on the calendar.

(WEAU) - Representatives for the Chippewa Valley Air Show have announced the event has been cancelled.
Julie Pangallo, the media representative for the event, says due to a lack of military support, the show has been cancelled.
She says the decision was made at a meeting tonight.
The cancellation comes on the heels of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels demonstration team cancelling its events for the season because of the congressional sequester.
The last air show was held in June of 2010.
