EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- You see it every time the weather gets cold, people leaving their engines running as they go on a quick errand.

Cops say don’t be tempted or you might lose your car.

The Eau Claire Police Department says every winter it sees multiple cases of car thefts from people leaving their cars running with the keys in the ignition.

Not only could you have your car stolen, officers say you could also get a ticket.

In the city of Eau Claire, there's a law on the books that says drivers cannot leave their vehicles running along city streets, in parking lots or outside businesses.

Officer Kyle Roder said you can still leave cars running outside your home but that may not be a good idea.

“If your vehicle is in your own private driveway, that's not covered under the ordinance. However, look at the safety factor of that, especially if you have kids in the neighborhood or there’s other people that may access that vehicle. Then there are some owner liabilities,” Officer Roder said.

If you're going to leave your car running in your own driveway police recommend using a remote starter and making sure your doors are locked.
