WINONA, Minn. (WEAU) -- An area sheriff’s department is trying to determine how a car got to the bottom of the Mississippi River.

When dive teams from Winona, Rochester and La Crosse Counties were having a training and demonstration session along the Mississippi River they were in for a surprise.

“While they were patrolling up and down past the levy with it looking into the water they observed what appeared to be a vehicle,” said Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand.

Brand said that vehicle is a Model T.

Brand said the car was found along the Winona Levy upstream from Godfather’s Pizza.

It’s currently under about 20 feet of water.”

“It was upside down, and it’s been in the sand for quite some time and the wheels are all off of it except for two of them on the passenger side,” said Brand.

Bruce’s Legacy Director and Founder Keith Cormican said that he was demonstrating his sonar system when the discovery was made on October 9.

“It’s extremely unusual. Unfortunately you know people want to get rid of things, they tend to put them in the water, run vehicles in the water to hide evidence for various reasons,” said Cormican.

Brand said Cormican and the Winona County Dive Team went down to look at the car at the end of October.

Brand said the sheriff’s department isn’t ruling anything out.

“I’m getting people calling in now giving me some information on cars that may have gone into the Mississippi River that were never pulled out, and we’re looking into that and also see if there would have been a crime at one time,” said Brand.

Brand says if the Sheriff’s Department doesn’t get any leads, the car will likely be pulled from the Mississippi in the spring.

If you have any information about could have happened to the car, call the Winona County Sheriff’s Department at 507-457-6368.
