Chippewa River expected to crest below flood stage

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – The Chippewa River is again expected to rise during the next few days, but it should crest more than five feet below flood stage.

The City of Eau Claire posted an update to its Facebook page Monday morning. It says the gauge at Grand Avenue read 765.3 feet Monday, which is nearly eight feet below flood stage. It says the National Weather Service predicts a crest of 767.7 feet on Thursday. Flood stage is 773 feet.

The city says the actual readings could vary, depending on upcoming temperatures, how the snow melts, and whether we receive rain or snow in the days ahead.

Flood Update 4/22/13: This morning, the Chippewa River Gauge at Grand Avenue read 765.3, which is approximately 7.7 feet below the flood stage of gauge elevation 773. The National Weather Service is forecasting the gauge readings to begin another gradual upward trend to crest at 767.7 feet on Thursday night. The actual flow rate and river stage may vary depending on precipitation and snow melt over the next several days and whether the precipitation comes as rain, sleet, or snow and will also depend on temperatures in the upper watershed.
