Community pitches in to build handicap-accessible bathroom for an 8-year-old girl

GREENWOOD, WI (WEAU) --Charity Bray is eight-years-old and was born with Down Syndrome. Her low muscle tone makes it difficult for her to do many things without help, including using the bathroom and taking showers.

That's why volunteers with a local business networking organization put their hands together to build an accessible bathroom for Charity, her parents and nine siblings.

"When they told me couple of months ago that this is happening, I shed a couple of tears; and of course my wife did too,” said Charity’s dad, Paul Bray.

“He told me (talking about Bray), he wanted to do something to make it easier for his daughter, but he did not have any money to do so,” said Bill Buettner with Pioneer Plumbing, and the member of the B.N.I.

The Business Network International, Marshfield Chapter, stepped in to take on the costly makeover. More than 40 members of the B.N.I. have donated labor, time, and money-to Charity.

“Charity cannot do stairs real well, so she can't use the shower in the basement, she has difficulty getting in and out of the tub on her own,” said Bray.

“What they're using now with the shower in the basement is unbelievable,” said Buettner.

To get to the shower the family had to go all the way down the stairs and through this very tight corner, that is difficult to get through even for the adults.

“It's difficult for us to go up and down the steps, how they do it every day is beyond me,” said Buettner.

“Getting in and out of the shower, being able to do all of those things herself, is a real big deal. So it will help building her confidence and help her to grow,” said Bray.

“It's definitely a big help for the family. They had some leaking issues with the toilet, and the sink; everything will be updated now,” said Ben Frederick, independent contractor and member of the B.N.I.

And Charity says she is also very excited about the new bathroom.

“We all work together, how we all help each other, like one big family, if someone in our group needs help, that this extreme we go to help them,” said Buettner.

Bray says Children's Miracle Network has also contributed financially to the project. Volunteers say they expect the bathroom to be completely remodeled in the next two weeks.
