LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – Crews have removed a boulder that fell onto State Highway 56 Tuesday morning.

A spokesman from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation says crews broke the rock apart with excavation equipment starting late Tuesday morning. The job was finished by Tuesday afternoon. The spokesman says Vernon County’s maintenance department did the work, and that the cost of it was included in the county’s budget.
GENOA, Wis. (WEAU) – A giant boulder ended up on State Highway 56 Tuesday morning.

It happened near Genoa, which is south of La Crosse. A worker from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation says his agency was called to the scene by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. Moisture from recent rain in the area caused the rock to fall off a bluff and land on the eastbound lane of the highway.

Nobody was hurt, and only the road was damaged. Crews are re-routing traffic on Highway 56 east, but allowing traffic through in the westbound lane. The DOT worker says he believes the rock, which is about the size of a dump truck, can be removed during the next couple hours. It's believed to weigh 30 tons.
