NEW INFORMATION: Suspect, deputy involved in Taylor County shooting identified

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) - The sheriff's deputy injured in a shooting in Taylor County Sunday is the nephew of the Chippewa County Sheriff.

Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk says that Chad Kowalczyk was shot in the stomach.  He was flown to a hospital in Wausau, had surgery last night, and "is doing ok," said Sheriff Kowalczyk.

The Taylor County Sheriff's Department says Chad Kowalczyk tried to contact a man at a home in the Westboro area Sunday night.  Deputies accuse that man, Alexander Schneider, 27, of Westboro (pictured above), of violating a court-ordered injunction.  The department says Deputy Kowalczyk came under fire and was hurt.  He was able to call for help.  Schneider was arrested later, and taken to the Lincoln County Jail.

MEDFORD, Wis. (TAYLOR COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) -- The following information is supplement to the Release provided early this morning.

The Taylor County Deputy Sheriff injured during the incident in the
Town of Westboro, Taylor County is Five-year veteran Chad R Kowalczyk. Officer Kowalczyk is currently under medical care at an area Hospital.

The individual taken into custody is 27 year old Alexander Joseph
Schneider (pictured above). Schneider is a Taylor County resident and remains in custody at this time.

As reported earlier, the Westboro and Taylor County Community can be assured there is no longer a safety threat related to this matter.

Aggressive Investigation into this matter is continuing. In consideration of the investigation, no further comments or information will be released until such time as investigators feel comfortable with further information being disclosed.

WESTBORO, Wis. (AP) --Authorities say a suspect has been arrested after a sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded in Taylor County.

Sheriff's officials say the deputy tried to contact the man at a home in the Westboro area Sunday night for an alleged violation of a court-ordered injunction. Authorities say the deputy came under fire and was injured, but was able to call dispatchers for help.

Emergency medical personnel and additional law enforcement officers were sent to the scene. The injured deputy was taken by air to the hospital where he's recovering.

WAOW-TV says the gunman was taken into custody about three hours later and was taken to the Lincoln County Jail.

WESTBORO, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Taylor Co. Sheriff's Department confirmed a suspect is in custody following a manhunt Sunday evening in Westboro, north of Medford. The Sheriff's department also confirmed that the suspect shot an officer earlier this evening.

The manhunt forced deputies to close the intersection of Hwy 13 and Hwy 102.

The name of the man in custody and the police officer shot have not been released.

TAYLOR COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Taylor Co. Sheriff's Department confirmed a manhunt was underway Sunday evening in Taylor County.

Deputies said the perimeter is believed to be contained but no other information has been released at this time.

The Eau Claire Co. Sheriff's Department said its tactical team was called to assist around 7:30 Sunday evening.
