(WEAU) - A big fire was turning heads Friday, but unlike our recent wildfires in northwestern Wisconsin, this one was planned and controlled.
The DNR had a controlled burn in Chippewa County, southeast of Chippewa Falls. Several viewers reported seeing the smoke from the fire.
As of Friday night, several counties in our area are under moderate risk for wildfires, including Barron, Rusk, Sawyer and Taylor counties. That means some restrictions are in place.
The DNR does some controlled burns like this one every one to five years to improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plants and to actually cut down on the wildfire potential.
If you're having a bonfire or campfire this weekend, firefighters want you to remember to fully extinguish the embers to avoid an accidental fire.
