BARRON COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- At Highway 8 just outside of Barron, you can see a memorial to 18-year-old Alex Hill of Cameron resting next to the billowing tall grass.

It is memories of a teenager's life and memories of what happened to him here last weekend.

"The drug has contributed to this accident and without it I don't think this would have occurred, and we wouldn't have a dead 18-year-old male," said Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald says Hill had been taking a liquid form of LSD at a party that night. He had wandered out onto a highway and was struck and killed by an on-coming semi-truck.

"This subject took several hits of this LSD type drug and made him hallucinate, and that's what the effects of this drug was doing," making these people hallucinate very badly, some to the point where they didn't know where they were at, according to our reports," Fitzgerald said.

He says this is a dangerous drug they are seeing for the first time in Barron County. He says he has not heard about it popping up in this part of the state.

"Our detectives are still out there working yet tonight on this case doing a source investigation, looking into where did it come from, how did we get it? What is this drug actually made of?" He said.

Fitzgerald hopes parents, teachers and everyone will come together to help keep this and any kind of drug off the streets and away from kids. He says parents can turn to doctors and even police if they have concerns.

"Our drug unit once in a while has people where they bring some substance in they found in their kid's bedroom," he added. "We're not out there to make arrests; we're out there to make a difference."

And if anyone needs a concrete example of just how dangerous drugs like this can be. There will always be a reminder at Highway 8 and 53.
