Delivery Dilemma: Getting your mail through the ice and snow

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Tim Vaini says he noticed something odd a couple weeks ago when day after day, he was not getting anything in his mailbox.

A week and a half went by and he decided to call the post office.

"My mailbox was inaccessible, they told me it was inaccessible because there was too much snow in the way," he said.

He disagreed with that claim, saying the snow and ice buildup in front of his mailbox was manageable enough for deliveries.

"I'd see the mail man drive by and he would just look at it and keep going," he said.

The Post Office gives a lot of choice to mail carriers, whether or not to approach your box. The main point is safety.

"They are professionals, they are out there every day in this stuff and we tell them to be safe," said Pete Nowacki, a spokesman for the USPS.

He says that means looking at each situation on its own and following some general safety rules.

"We might have spots where there is so much snow buildup that we can't get the vehicle up to the boxes, and if that's the case, we tell them not to dismount and climb snow banks," Nowacki added.

33 years on the job and mail carrier Steve Writz has delivered mail in all conditions -- ice, snow, warm, and wet.

"The ice is the worst and generally on the steps, so if people can take care of that it will help us out a lot," Writz said.

He says he tries his best to make sure you get your mail everyday.

"That's our job," he said.

But he looks out for his own safety and hopes you can help out, too. And safety is something Tim Vaini is all for as well. He is all for keeping mail carriers away from the slickest and snowiest spots.

"If it's something where it endangers their safety, definitely," Vaini said.

Having almost missed some of his own due dates from his mail that got held, he is just hoping if conditions are safe, he can get his daily delivery.
