EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The big retail stores sure do get all of the attention during the Black Friday, but some prefer the quiet of Downtown to kick off their Holiday shopping season.

"What we've noticed in the past couple of years with black Friday is that people go out shopping to the big box stores, and then they come here around lunch time,” said Jamie Kyser, the co-owner of “Tangled Up in Hue”.

"On black Friday we did not want to support the large corporations. We don't like how they opened at midnight or even earlier on Thanksgiving, and we love supporting local stores,” said shopper Alyssa Gunderson.

Most local stores Downtown Eau Claire did open later in the day to give shoppers time to take a break from the early morning door busters, before they continue their shopping experience.

"It gives people a little bit of time to get some lunch and them continue on with their day of continuing shopping at some more store like what downtown has to offer,” said Jessica Abbott, owner of “Whippersnappers”.

Local shop owners say even though they cannot compete with big box stores, they still have some fantastic deals that you can receive without pushing your way through.

"It's much calmer; kind of a good way to wind down and still get some excellent deals. We don't get people in here pushing and shoving, name calling,” said Abbott.

"It's not crowded here today. We've tried the big malls and the big stores and gifts are all the same. At local stores you can find more unique gifts,” said shopper Sarah Gunderson.

And still, in the mix of Black Friday deals, some local stores don’t see much shopping action until closer to Christmas.

"Black Friday is usually a quiet day for us. It is easy to get lost in the mix with all the chaos that goes on,” said Eric Thompson, owner of “Pedals’ Music”.

Still local retailers stay very optimistic about Thanksgiving weekend, especially with the Shop Small Saturday that kicks off tomorrow all across the Nation and encourages community to support local business by spending their buck at the local shops.
