(WEAU) - Charges have been filed against a man who deputies say was driving intoxicated when he got into a fatal crash Monday.
Gary Clark, 62, of Brandon is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of vehicle and by negligent operation of a vehicle.
The Barron County Sherriff’s Department says it happened around 9 p.m. on Monday. Deputies say Clark failed to stop at a stop sign at Highway 8 and hit a car.
The driver of the car, Kathleen Smith, 64, of Rice Lake died at the scene. A passenger, James Smith, 17, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
BARRON , Wis. (BARRON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) - On Monday, July 22, 2013, at 8:54 p.m., the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a call of a two vehicle crash on Hwy 8 at 8th Street. Deputies from the Barron County Sheriff’s Department along with the Wisconsin State Patrol, Mayo Ambulance, Cumberland Ambulance, Turtle Lake Police Department, Turtle Lake First Responders, Almena Fire Department and Like Link Helicopter were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, it was determined that a truck driven by Gary Clark, 62 of Brandon WI, was traveling south on 8th Street and failed to stop at the stop sign at Hwy 8 and struck a car driven by Kathleen Smith, 64 of Rice Lake, who was deceased at the scene. A passenger in Smith’s car was James Smith, 17 of Rice Lake, was transported to Cumberland Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Clark was flown to Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire and later released and transported to the Barron County Jail on charges of Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is reconstructing the accident scene. Hwy 8 was closed for 4 hours.
