Eau Claire Police have responded to more than 130 crashes since the snowstorm on February 20th.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- "I try not to complain and usually I don't mind but this winter I'm done, ready to be done," said Julia Strand.

Chances are you echo her feelings on what has been a harsh Wisconsin winter. It is one that has taken a serious tolls on our roads.

"On Claremont and Craig road, that was a bad spot, almost slid through a stoplight there," added Melissa Mattice.

It has been a little more than a week since the snow storm last Thursday. But the roads remain dangerous. The proof is in the numbers.

"The Eau Claire Police Department has handled over 130 crashes," said Officer Kyle Roder with the Eau Claire Police Department.

That is more than 130 crashes between Thursday, February 20th through Thursday, February 27th.

Officer Roder says the police department always has at least eight officers on duty. But the increase in calls to crash scenes means fewer officers are able to respond to other incidents.

"Many of those crashes where we have to block roadways will have two to three officers on those crashes, so it limits our resources across the city," Roder added.

Crashes can cause road closures and could even set up things for another incident. The department has turned to Twitter to help re-route drivers before they are even on the road.

Roder says if you end up getting into an accident be patient if it is minor. He says the department stacks calls based on priority, so response time will depend on the severity or circumstances of the crash.

"If it's a crash where you're in the middle of traffic unable to move your vehicle, call and we will have an officer there as soon as possible, especially on the heavy traffic areas," he added.

While accidents do happen, Roder says there are three simple rules to remember that can help prevent them.

"People can really help themselves out by being patient, allowing extra time and being courteous to other drivers," he added.
