EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- When it comes to shopping for kids, toys are always on the top of the list, especially right now. And experts say the toys you pick could directly impact your child’s development.

There are many great choices out there when it comes to shopping for young children. But one question always remains: what is the best toy? The choice between traditional and electronic toys can make your decision even a tougher one.

"Children are going to gain more in growth and development by using more traditional toy,” said Brook Berg, the Executive Director of Eau Claire Family Resource Center.

"Some of our most popular items are really your stand-by toys: the train sets, the building block sets, the dolls, the play food- those are the things that will always be popular; they really build on child's imagination,” said Jennifer Quilling, the co-owner of “Imagination Nation.”

And it's the imagination that experts say might not get enough stimulation with the use of electronics.

"Sometimes with electronic toys the children are viewing the toy and it's telling them what to do next, and maybe they lose a little bit of an aspect of their imagination,” said Quilling.

Some parents say however, that if the child is interested in electronic toys it doesn't hurt to try it out.

"I'm definitely pro electronic toys. I think that it probably stimulates a different part of the brain, than say traditional toys,” said the mother of 2, Lydia Ojibway.

And experts agree; in our day and age electronic toys can offer something traditional toys just can't.

"We do want to make sure that our children are up with technology and that they are able to use a computer, your know, maneuver their way around an iPad, or a leap-pad,” said Berg.

And whether you choose electronic or a tradition toys for your children this holiday season, both parents and experts agree: moderation and balance in use is the key to the most beneficial play time.

"I think it's important to have a balance, that they spend enough time with traditional sort of toy and just a right amount of time with electronic toys as well,” said Ojibway.
