ELK MOUND, Wis. (WEAU) -- Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car crashes. On Friday, EMS workers showed students at Elk Mound High School the dangers of texting while driving and distracted driving.

The teenagers heard some staggering statistics from an EMT, were shown a crash simulation and heard from a girl who was hurt in a distracted driving crash in 2009.

"I think the biggest thing we can take away today is that life is precious and it's very easy for things to change in an instant and that vigilance and attentiveness while driving can save lives,” says Hugh Goodrich, a guidance counselor at Elk Mound.

If you get caught texting while driving in Wisconsin, you could face up to a $400 fine.
