(WEAU) - In Eau Claire, extra security surrounded Memorial High School Friday.
A note went out to parents relating the threat that is associated with the Mayan calendar.
Though unsubstantiated, the school and Eau Claire police are taking no chances.
Added police presence will be on school grounds all day Friday.
As you may know, some interpret December 21st as being the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar.
A flurry of calls and emails came to Eau Claire Memorial principal Dave oldenberg's office Thursday and Friday after someone started a rumor that the school could be a target to a threat of violence.
"All of the claims were unsubstantiated. We didn't find anything that would raise any undo concern," Oldenberg said.
Although no specific target or weapon was mentioned, he said the school along with Eau Claire police took the claims seriously.
"We've been on some heightened awareness, since last Friday, and today we had a little bit more security and we communicated with parents that we're investigating," Oldenberg said Friday.
An extra police officer, along with more squad cars patrolling the area found no real evidence of the threat or its source, while school staff for signs of anything unusual. Oldenberg said he wants parents to know the school is safe and hopes the students can still learn a lesson from all this.
"Ask a friend, or ask a Facebook follower or somebody they tweet with, where are you hearing this? Who is telling you this? And do second-level investigation."
Although it took up extra time and resources, he said he was happy students and parents came forward.
"The self-regulation of our students is something that we are really proud of in how students work hand in hand with teachers and guidance counselors to make sure things don't occur."
