FBI: Man fatally shot in Boston bombing probe confessed to 2011 murder

WALTHAM, MA (NBC)--A man with ties to Boston marathon bombing suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was shot and killed in Florida after trying to attack an FBI agent during questioning.

27-year-old Ibragim Todashev allegedly attacked an agent with a knife. According to law enforcement officials, Todashev was a mixed martial arts fighter and knew Tsarnaev when he lived in Boston.

While he is not suspected of playing a role in the marathon bombing, investigators say Todashev confessed to involvement in a Boston area triple murder two years ago.

In September of 2011, three men were found brutally murdered inside an apartment in Waltham, with their throats cut and marijuana covering their bodies.

No suspects were ever arrested in that case.

At the time of the confession, Todashev was being questioned by agents as part of an ongoing effort to find and talk to anyone who had contact with Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The FBI says a man being questioned by authorities in the Boston bombing probe was fatally shot when he initiated a violent confrontation.

The shooting incident early Wednesday took place in Orlando, Fla., where an FBI agent along with other law enforcement personnel were interviewing the man, identified by the FBI as Ibragim Todashev.

In a statement, FBI spokesman Paul Bresson said the FBI agent acted on an imminent threat and shot the interview subject.

Todashev was killed and the FBI agent was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An FBI team was dispatched from Washington to review the shooting, a standard step that is taken in such incidents.
