FALL CREEK, WIS. (WEAU) -- "I do worry if the department couldn't get to your home in time," said Leonese Smith, who has lived in Fall Creek for more than 40 years.

She says she remembers some big fires in that time, like the one that took the furniture store where the village hall now sits.

"They had to go down to the pond for water," she said.

The department has been there for the community, now it is calling on the community for help.

"We actually have first responders going on fire calls during the day because we don't have enough firefighters," said Chief Bob Dewitz.

He says they have 25 volunteer firefighters and another 7 first responders. The problem is most of them are only around during the nighttime and weekend hours.

That has made getting out to calls during the day difficult, especially with homes outside of town and calls from townships.

"During the day we have one EMT based in town that is able to go on our calls, she responds to 75 to 80 percent of our calls," said Karen Wright, the EMS Deputy Chief.

Work, family schedules, and training make it tough to find volunteers. But even a little time, could have a big effect.

"Even if they can make one call a month, that would help us out," Wright added.

And it is that forward direction Leonese Smith hopes her community will keep going in the next 40 years to come.

"We always hope to keep improving, and make our community a safer place in which to live," she added.
