BARRON, Wis. (BARRON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) - On Thursday Dec 20, 2012 at 5:20am the Barron County Sheriff’s Dept received a call of a Car vs. Horse crash on Hwy D near 29th St in the Town of Chetek.

Deputies from the Barron County Sheriff’s Dept, the Chetek Police Dept, Chetek Ambulance, Chetek Fire Dept, Lakeview Medical Center Ambulance and the Chetek First Responders were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival it was discovered that a car driven by Dennis Wood, 22 from Holcombe was traveling east on D when he struck 3 horses that were in the roadway.

Wood was extricated from the vehicle and transported to LMC and later transferred to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire with severe injuries.

One of the horses was deceased due to the impact and the other two horses were put down by Sheriff’s Deputies due to the injuries.

Per Chris Fitzgerald, Barron County Sheriff
HOLCOMBE, Wis. (WEAU) -- When Denny Wood left for work Thursday morning, Wisconsin was in the middle of a snow storm.

It was 5:20 a.m. when the father of three said goodbye to his family, got in his car, and was on the road.

"I kinda held off on texting him because he was driving," said Samantha Miller, Denny's girlfriend.

But rather than getting a call or text, they got a knock on the door a short time later.

"We don't get many visitors out that way, we're kinda out in the middle of nowhere, so when you hear a knock on the door in the morning, you wonder what's going on," she said.

It was the sheriff's department. Denny had hit a horse on the way to work in the snow storm and was badly hurt.

It is news that came as a shock. And now, has put the family in a bind. On Wednesday, Samantha is planning on going to the hospital for another reason; their second child is on the way.

"I kinda don't wanna go through it but at the same time it can't wait till after he's out," she said.

Aside from not having Denny by her side when their new child comes into the world, she is worried about how her family is going to make it with two life-changing events.

"We don't have his income now, which we were hoping for after we had the baby and I had off," she said.

She has gotten a lot of support from family and friends this holiday season, but knows the road to recovery will be a long one.

Still, she sees the light ahead and knows even though this Christmas will be different than others, there is hope.

"When we heard what happened we were expecting the worse, but we have seen nothing but the best from his recovery," she said.
