EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Before you sit down with your family this week for Thanksgiving dinner, it's important to remember there are local families that need help getting food on the table.

Feed My People is an organization that acts as a link between food suppliers and food assistance programs like pantries, shelters and community kitchens.

“Any of the programs in west-central Wisconsin that serves people in need can order the food, and give it out to those in need,” said Executive Director Emily Moore.

Moore said there’s an increased need around the holidays.

“Larger gatherings of people and some added expenses and so on,” Moore said.

Wanting to make sure no one feels left out of the festive eats, Moore said this time of year assistance programs are looking for donations of hams, turkeys and other holiday-type food.

She said donations from people and companies to the food bank are also stepped up.

“We just got a major donation from Holiday Vacations last week. It was 800 hams, 800 turkeys, 800 cans of cranberries and 800 cans of corn,” Moore said.

While some choose to up their food donations around the holidays, Moore said it's important to remember that the need for food extends throughout the rest of the year.

“This is a very generous community, but it would be wonderful if that passion for giving that’s so strong this time of year would just extend throughout the year,” Moore said.

The executive director said there's a misconception that people who get help with food do it on a regular basis.

“When in actuality, most people who seek food assistance only do it a few times a year. It’s just to get over hurdles,” Moore said.

And those hurdles are often during the holidays.
