Girls experience career of firefighter and paramedic during area camp

Altoona, WI (WEAU) -- An area camp has girls returning for a second year to experience the career of a firefighter or paramedic, with real life practical exercises.

While, it may appear like just some fun in the sun, the girls participating in the Girls on Fire – Rekindled camp are actually learning lifesaving skills.

The Altoona Fire Department Explorer Post 800 and Chippewa Valley Technical College fire and medic program teamed up to start the camp, now in its second year.

"It's all about introducing females to firefighting and EMS" says Shaylee Miracle, student coordinator of Girls on Fire.

"However, it's more so about building them up as individuals and preparing them to go out in the workforce, whatever that may be. Building the self-confidence and challenging them and getting them to test their own boundaries, as well as make new friends as they go," Miracle says.

Miracle says the camp allows the girls to get physical. She says, “They do a lot of fire tactics that fire firefighters do with ladders, and climbing, and mannequins. They're doing back boarding. Everything they're doing out today is all physical, they're pulling each other and rescuing each other from the water."

The camp runs for four days., ending on Sunday. Tomorrow there will be all day classes relating to emergency medical services and patient care.
