Group urges Walker to accept federal money for Badgercare

(WEAU) - Several people gathered in Eau Claire Wednesday to call on Governor Walker to accept billions of dollars for Badgercare.

Walker is deciding whether or not to accept $12 billion from the federal government for healthcare coverage. Supporters say more than 140,000 low-income adults in Wisconsin will fall between the cracks and have no other option for healthcare coverage if Walker rejects the federal money.

State Representative, Dana Wachs, says it’s a non-partisan issue. Wachs told us "of that $12 billion dollars, we believe around 211,000 additional people will be covered in Badgercare, our Medicaid program, and Badgercare in this state, so it’s a real win-win if you think about it."

Governor Walker's Office sent us a statement concerning Badgercare:

“The last budget Governor Walker signed into law increased state taxpayer spending on Medicaid by $1.2 billion—the largest increase in our state’s history, and one of the largest increases per capita in the country.

The cost to continue Medicaid under current law is estimated at $664 million GPR over the biennium. Nearly 40 percent or about $258 million is due to the federal government reducing funding for Medicaid for our state, increasing costs due to changes in the Affordable Care Act, and increasing payments for Medicaid coverage.

Given current fiscal uncertainties, the federal funding for the expansion remains in question.”
