EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) -- Hutchinson Technology Inc. plans to cut another 150 jobs in Eau Claire.

HTI spokeswoman Connie Pautz said Wednesday company officials anticipate the reduction will be complete by fall.

The layoffs come as the Hutchinson, Minn.-based company continues to shift assembly work to its plant in Thailand.

HTI had peak local employment of about 2,500 since launching Eau Claire operations in 1995. Pautz says employment is projected to drop to about 595 by the time the latest downsizing effort is finished.

HTI designs, develops and manufactures tiny components for the disk drive industry, a key component of the volatile high technology sector.

Eau Claire's economic development administrator, Mike Schatz, says he's disappointed to learn of the layoffs at one of Eau Claire's largest employers.

STORY FROM 2/5/13

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - Hutchinson Technology wants to either sell or lease part of a building on its Eau Claire campus.

CBRE has the 159,000-square-foot space on the far west side of the campus listed on its website. Mike Schatz with the city says this has been in the works for several years, since the company started building a plant in Thailand.

A Hutchinson Technology spokesperson says the part of the building available for sale or lease is where the company has its assembly operation. She says the rest of the building will be used for Hutchinson’s component manufacturing.

Schatz says the space has been shown once sometime during the past 3 months. He wouldn't say who looked at it.

CBRE has not disclosed an asking price.

Schatz, as well as Eau Claire City Council President Kerry Kincaid say they’re not sure what it means for jobs locally.
