EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A family still grieving the loss of their only son after more than two years, is helping the less fortunate during the holidays.

Joseph Fike drowned in the Chippewa River in July of 2011. He was 21-years-old.

The family donated homemade gifts to the community table and homeless shelters in Eau Claire to honor the memory of their son who, they say, was taken far too soon.

“My son was the one that was always giving, always helping people,” said Joe’s mother Anita Fike.

And It's something Joe’s family wants to continue in his memory.
The money that Anita Fike would normally spend on Joe’s birthday and holiday gifts now goes toward yarn.
She uses it to make winter hats for those in need.

“Last year I gave away 150 hats; this year so far I've made 300 and I have 130 left yet,” said Fike.

She says nothing is wasted. Whatever is not used for hats goes toward blankets. She gives them to homeless shelters in town.

“Every single stich that goes in here, is made with love,” she added.

This is her second year of donating the hats and blankets.
People who believe in her cause are now donating some of the yarn she needs.

“He (Joe) taught me some fantastic lessons, of always being there for people, loving people, showing people God's unconditional love at all time; no matter what kind of person they are,” said Fike.

She calls these past two years the hardest time in her life.
Now, she says giving back is helping her move on.

“I know that Joe would be very proud of me,” added Fike.

After Fike died Eau Claire Police determined that his drowning was an accident. His mother and father still don't believe that.

In 2011, officers said they would follow up on any new leads in the case.
We reached out for a comment from Eau Claire Police Tuesday, but did not hear back.
