La Crosse School District referendum passes

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Voters in one area school district have passed a nearly $21 million dollar referendum.

Unofficial results on La Crosse County’s Website said there were more than 4,147 yes votes and 1,990 no votes for the La Crosse School District’s Referendum.

The referendum will allow the district to exceed its revenue limit by more than 4 million dollars per year from the 2014-2015 school year until the 2018-2019 school year.

The referendum will fund educational programs, technology upgrades and security improvements.

It will also help keep class sizes small.

However, Superintendent Randy Nelson said the district will still have to cut about $2 million from its budget.

“The increased revenue limit that we’re allowed to use for the coming year will not cover those costs. So in order to cover those costs of just doing business we’ll have to make reductions to bring forward a balanced budget to the school board,” said Nelson.

The referendum won’t increase taxes.

This is a continuation of the current referendum which expires June 30.
