LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- An area county board is weighing their options about how to develop a parking lot.

Lot C is currently ranked the highest development lot in the Vision 20/20 Development Plan for the city of La Crosse.

“There’s a lot of traffic, it’s close to downtown, it’s close to campus and the healthcare facilities, it’s in an historical area, and also it has no structure on it,” said La Crosse County Board Supervisor Joe Veenstra.

Joe Veenstra chairs the administrative and downtown campus study committee for the La Crosse County Board of Supervisors.

He said a company finished a study this week about how the parking lot could be developed.

Veenstra said if Lot C were developed there would have to be some form of parking in the area, because the lot is used by juries and people attending events downtown.”

The lot is also used by county employees and customers.

La Crosse County Community Development Specialist Brian Fukuda said some ways the lot could be used include a hotel, a museum or housing.

“It’s a good opportunity a mixed use development that would kind of bring some of the uses together to fill some of the need that we have in the market in the downtown area of La Crosse,” said Fukuda.

Fukuda said the lot could also be used for the county administrative center.

“There are some pretty significant issues with this building, It does have asbestos throughout the building, there’s some major systems that are about ready to fail,” said Fukuda.

Veenstra said the board is in getting analysis from an architecture firm about what their options are for the county administrative center.

“There’s nothing set in stone. We’re just doing analysis and obtaining data to try to make the best judgment call for the taxpayers in the county,” said Veenstra.

Veenstra said the board expects to get information from the architecture firm at the end of the month.

Veenstra said if anyone has suggestions, they should contact their county supervisor or attend a board meeting.
