La Crosse recognized as ideal place for veterans to find jobs

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- An area city has been named a top place for veterans to find work.

La Crosse ranked third among small metro areas with populations of less than 175,000.

Chris Coleman served in the Army and the Marines.

Now he’s a Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist, and helps other veterans find jobs.

He said veterans are ideal employees.

“They’re depended upon to answer any call that’s thrown to them. They have to get up early in the morning everyday, they have to go to work. They have to be in good shape,” said Coleman.

Adam Flood served in the Marine Corps, and works as the La Crosse County Veterans Service Officer.

He said it can be an adjustment for veterans after leaving the military.

“They want to feel like they’re part of their community again. A lot of them come out with a sense of purpose of wanting to assist in the community or be productive again,” said Flood.

The recent study was done by the United Services Automobile Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Program.

The study looked at several factors, including unemployment rates, recent job growth and access to higher education and healthcare.

Eric Engquist with the U.S.A.A. said once veterans leave the military, they need to become contributing members of their community.

“I think that we’ve seen an uptick in the recognition of being valued that service members and their families bring to corporate America, and we want to continue to build on that,” said Engquist.
