EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Envirotech, Inc. reveals its latest creation Friday called the Lightning Electric car.

The car is first of its kind and designed and produced in Eau Claire by the local company.

President of Envirotech Mark Kalish says he started working on the Lightning about four years ago and now, it’s finally complete.

"I felt like the electric cars available aren't that fun to drive. They’re just for transportation, a four-door sedan. I wanted something that would really bring back the real driving experience,” says Kalish.

Kalish says the idea for the 1940s and 50s Indy race car-inspired Lightning came from a North High School senior who was on the electric racing team and came to work for Envirotech.

And already, people are asking about the Lightning.

"I have a long list of people that have expressed an interest in it now that we have a completed car to show and let people to drive. We're expecting sales to be pretty brisk,” says Kalish.

With the top speed just under 100-miles an hour, Kalish says the Lightning is a penny-wise decision for consumers.

“It cost about a penny a mile to drive it’s ridiculously cheap to operate,” he says.

No gas is needed either in the two-seater because all you need to do is plug it into a regular 110 socket.

Another plus, is it’s the sound, or lack thereof. The motor is turned on with the sound of a ‘click’, but nothing more than the tires rolling on the ground can be heard.

Kalish says the Lightning is made for those who in events like Auto Cross, a casual run to the grocery store or even just a drive downtown to a burger joint.

But the electric car is part of a bigger picture.

“I started thinking, what about on a global level? How many cars are sitting at that very moment in time using gas? What if we could change that and how much gas we use?” says Kalish.

Envirotech says it takes about a year to produce one of its electric cars, with a price tag around $28,000.
