Local athletes excited about 127th Silver Mine Ski Invitational

The 127th Silver Mine Ski Invitational North American Nordic championships will be held Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Eau Claire. Many of the top jumpers from around the world including Finland and Norway are in Western Wisconsin. Members of the Eau Claire Flying Eagles ski club along with jumpers from the United States and Canada will also compete.
17-year old Nick Mattoon had the honor of flying down the newly renovated Silver Mine in-run first on Thursday night, a LIVE jump that was seen on WEAU 13 News at Six. Mattoon, along with fellow Eau Claire native Ben Loomis, the 2012 Long-Standing jump champion both spoke LIVE to Sports Director Bob Gallaher.
Kudos to all the volunteers including Dave Tomten and Zach Jastrow for all their hard work to get the hill ready. More than 30 jumpers including one of the top female skiers, Eau Claire's Emilee Anderson got in their practice jumps on a chilly but otherwise perfect Thursday evening to jump.
Among the other attractions this weekend at Silver Mine include the two-day pond hockey tournament, several youngsters took to the ice Thursday evening, old school hockey that looked like fun.
Tickets are 15 dollars at the gate (kids 12 & under are free), the competition begins Friday night at 7 pm, and at 12 pm on Saturday. There will be LIVE music by The Dweebs on Saturday and make sure you stay warm in the WEAU 13 News Hospitality Tent.
