TOWN OF SEYMOUR, Wis. (WEAU) -- The news of the gun control proposals is causing waves across the country and right here in the Chippewa Valley.

President Barack Obama acknowledged his proposals will be met by opposition from many gun-rights groups, but asked for public support.

The $500 million package of proposals he'll send to Congress includes requiring criminal background checks on all gun sales, banning "military-style" assault weapons and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds.

The president also signed a series of 23 executive actions that will strengthen current laws, expand mental health measures, and promote federal research into gun crimes.

President Obama’s action on gun control was on the minds of members at the Eau Claire Rod and Gun club Wednesday afternoon.

“You certainly have to give him credit for trying to do something to stop gun violence, I’m not sure what he has proposed is going to do that,” said Stephen Gilbertson of Chippewa Falls.

Gilbertson said he makes the case that the guns just aren't going off on their own.

“They need to take a closer look at the medical conditions of people. If they didn’t have a firearm they're going to use some other form of weapon, a knife, a baseball bat or anything like that,” Gilbertson said.

Many on the other side feel, these new laws are needed to protect our children.

“I can see where they’re coming from, because of the kids,” said Steven Olson of Altoona.

But some gun owners like Olson worry where's this going to stop?
Are rifles and handguns next to be banned?

“Most of the people are pretty smart, they're not crazy people. They're the one percent and the rest of us have to pay for it. That's not right,” Olson said.
