EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- As lawmakers in Washington, D.C. continue to debate new gun control laws business at gun shows across the country is shooting up.

And the Chippewa Valley is no exception.

WEAU 13 News stopped by the Eau Claire Indoor Sports Center for the Eau Claire Indoor Gun Show, which ran from Friday to Sunday.

There was a constant stream of people to look at a sea of guns.

Why's everyone getting locked and loaded?

Some say it's because of the Commander-in-chief.

“Obama, he's even a better gun salesman than Clinton was,” said Robert Pucci, the show’s director.

“It's been the most insane gun show I’ve ever been to. Everyone's a little gun and ammo crazy right now because of the possible gun prohibitions that are coming down the line.” said Chad Olson with C&C Pawnbrokers, a vendor at the show.

President Barack Obama has proposed new gun control laws that would reduce magazine size, ban military-style assault weapons and require background checks for all gun sales, including gun shows.

While right now there's nothing stopping people from selling guns privately at shows without a background check, it's different for actual dealers.

“At most gun shows, 80-85% of the people selling the firearms are federally licensed dealers. They're required by law to do background checks,” Pucci said.

“We have them fill out the paperwork here; we call it in from here. If it's a long gun and they're approved immediately then they can take it right away, a handgun of course you have to wait 48 hours regardless,” Olson said.

Some argue that if an assault rifle is banned, it’s not hard to take parts of other guns and make a similar weapon.

Gun shoppers say they’re waiting for developments on the new controls.

“If they definitely put a timeline on it or a rate, you'd see these shows every weekend I think to get the last minute buys. Nothing has passed yet. So keep the shows rolling I guess,” said Garret Zwiefelhofer of Bloomer, who bought a shotgun at the show.
