(WEAU) - It will soon be the end of an era in the Eau Claire music scene.
Long-time Eau Claire Memorial and current Eau Claire North Band Director Bruce Hering is retiring from public education at the end of the school year. Hering had been a music instructor at Memorial for two decades before getting transferred to North a couple years ago, and has the reputation for helping build nationally acclaimed jazz bands.
This afternoon, he told us what he will miss most about teaching. "It would just be standing up in front of kids and rehearsing them, and performing with them. That's a special thing. I conduct an adult group, the Chippewa Valley Jazz orchestra, and that's really fun, but it just isn't the same vibe though you know. There's something about being in front of youth and all the energy that they have that's just really special."
Hering says he is entertaining a variety of options for the next chapter of his life including a position with Jazz at Lincoln Center, writing a book and helping with a band program in Costa Rica.
