Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports the death of a Minnesota man as a result of a bicycle incident that occurred on June 22, 2013. The incident occurred on Railroad Avenue just south of Cherry Grove Road in the Town of Viroqua.

Todd G. Peterson age 59 from Faribault Minnesota, was participating in the Kickapoo Kicker bicycle event being held in Vernon County when it appeared he had a medical problem and another bicyclist found him lying next to his bike on the shoulder of the road unresponsive.

Within minutes emergency personnel arrived and began CPR on Mr. Peterson. The attempt to resuscitate Mr. Peterson was unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead a short time later by Vernon County Coroner Janet Reed. Mr. Peterson was wearing his helmet but the cause of death appears to be unrelated to any type of head trauma.

Assisting at the scene were the Viroqua Fire Department, Tri State Ambulance, Viroqua Police Department, and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
