(WEAU) - Top area math students competed for a spot in the regional MathCounts Competition Thursday.
14 middle schools from the region got together at South Middle School in Eau Claire. MathCounts is a national club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement.
Organizers say four teams will advance to the state competition in Madison and then get a chance to compete for nationals. The winners in the national round get to meet President Obama.
Brian Amundson, an engineer with sponsor, Xcel Energy told us “It's really exciting to see these young people as they demonstrate their math skills and see how they're going to step up into the roles as future engineers, and scientists and technicians.”
Organizers say the students competing in the math tournament are also the same students they'll see apply for scholarships at leading engineering and technology schools.
