CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) -- Right now millions of holiday packages are crisscrossing the nation, making this the busiest shipping day of the year.

WEAU 13 News went to the UPS store in Chippewa Falls Monday to see how it is dealing with the holiday rush.

“Gifts, candy, baked goods; different things people have brought in for the family and want to get it nice and safe so they usually have us package it up for them,” said UPS Associate Holly Bergerson.

On any other day, Bergerson said the store move about 35 packages, but lately?

“In the Christmas season it about triples, so we're anywhere from 70 to 100 packages per day,” Bergerson said.

During the holidays it's all hands on deck, with shipping companies hiring seasonal employees to handle the extra work.

The Chippewa Valley’s recent snow storm has slowed down people getting into the store, but Bergerson said it won't have any big impact on sending out gifts.

“Of course, still a few people affected by (Hurricane) Sandy in New York and New Jersey area. But around here, we're definitely used to it and things are moving along nicely,” Bergerson said.

Things are just as busy at the Fed Ex global hub in Memphis.

The company said it will move an estimated 19 million packages Monday, a new record.

Fed Ex said this is due to a big increase in online holiday shopping.

It closely monitors weather and traffic with various cameras and tracking devices across the country to make sure the precious cargo is traveling smoothly.

"We develop a plan, a strategy if you will, to mitigate those problems, whether it be weather or traffic or hurricane, or typhoon, we work around those things to make sure those packages get there,” said Paul Tronsor of Fed Ex Global Operations Control.

UPS workers said if you want packages to arrive before Christmas Day, you'll want to take them in this week.

If you wait too long you could end up paying a lot more for a last-minute delivery.
