Mother connects with son who was abducted more than 30 years ago

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU)- After years of searching for her son who was abducted as a toddler, a Chippewa Falls mom is able to tell her now grown son that she loves him.

Kathy Amaya says her ex-husband took her son to Mexico when he was just a toddler. Now the woman from Chippewa Falls says she was able to connect with her son after her he tried to come back to America.

Kathy Amaya says she never gave up searching for her son and she hopes to be able to finally be able to see him in person soon.

“This one is my favorite, I always used to dress him in the vest because he looked cute like that,” Kathy Amaya said as she held an old photograph of her son David.

Childhood pictures and memories was all that Amaya had to remember her son for more than 30 years.

“One day my ex-husband came to my sister she was watching him and picked him up and never returned him,” she explained

Kathy says when her ex-husband took her son David, she knew something was wrong.

“When I didn't hear from him I knew he took him to Mexico,” she added.

After countless phone calls she turned to the police for answers.

“They were saying they couldn't do anything because he was in Mexico,” Amaya said.

As the years went by and technology grew Kathy Amaya never stopped searching for her son.

“I went on the internet searching a lot on Facebook and Myspace and all of that but I had no luck,” Amaya said.

Then after 30 years, she got a call from an unlikely source.

“The border patrol in San Diego called me and told me that they had someone detained that was crossing the border and he said his name was David Amaya,” Kathy Amaya explained.

After doing some digging it, Kathy confirmed it was her son who grew up living with his grandparents in Mexico.

David doesn't speak English but he was able to talk with his mom on the phone Sunday. Our NBC affiliate in San Diego spoke with him later that day.

“I didn't know my mother and now I find out that she has been looking for me for 30 years .When they told me they located her I was so surprised and so emotional that I started crying,” David Amaya said.

Kathy Amaya says right now David is staying at a church in San Diego. They are working to raise enough money so he can travel back to Chippewa Falls and be reunited with his family by Thanksgiving.
