Motorcycle season getting slow start because of cold temps and snow

Motorcycle sales are starting to slowly pick up even as the temps stay cold and snow is on the ground.

LAKE HALLIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- "We're all starting to get cabin fever pretty bad, we're feeling it at this point," said Nate Holmes.

He is tired of staying indoors and off the roads. He has been longing for warm temps, sunny skies and the day he can get back out on his motorcycle.

"I'm so ready to start riding, the more I talk about it, the more it hurts," he said.

He is also banking on a better forecast - because he knows it will bring more customers into Zacho Sports Center, where he works, looking for that new ride.

Business for motorized bikes has been slower because of the colder temperatures and snowy roads. But he says the momentum is starting to swing in the other direction.

"Used sales and things are going to take off now," he said.

At Xtreme Motorsports in Chippewa Falls, bike sales are starting to pick up as well - even though customers know it will be awhile before they can hit the streets.

Rob Christensen with the store says the best time for motorcycle sales changes year to year. Here is a prime example:

"Last year with the late snow season we sold more motorcycles in January than we did snowmobiles," he said.

And that brings up another good point -- when motorcycles haven't been selling, snowmobiles usually are.

At Xtreme Sports Center there are usually some snowmobiles left on the floor by the end of the season. This year they are sold out.

It is something that does not happen often.

"Probably once in a blue moon but we would like to see it happen each year," Christensen said.

At Zacho Sports Center it is the same story.

"One of the best in the past four or five years at least," Holmes said.

It may be a different thrill than riding a motorcycle but a substitute until the roads are ready once again for riding.
